First-time setup

A short checklist for stable performance and fewer surprises. Work top to bottom once; revisit individual steps when you change hardware or jump to a new nightly.

    Install from the download page

    Prefer portable folders if you test multiple versions side by side; otherwise the installer keeps shortcuts and file associations tidy on Windows.

    Add BIOS dumped from your own console

    Point PCSX2 at the folder containing your .bin / region files. Mismatched regions can cause boot failures that look like bad rips.

    Add your game library path

    ISO, BIN/CUE, and CHD are common. If a title does not appear, confirm the extension is allowed and the rip is complete.

    Graphics, audio, controllers

    Start with Vulkan where available; fall back to Direct3D 11 or OpenGL if a specific title misbehaves. Map every PS2 button you need, including analog sticks and pressure where the game uses them.

    Launch one test game before heavy tuning

    Confirm you reach title screen and in-game with defaults. Only then raise internal resolution, enable widescreen patches, or touch speed hacks — and change one variable at a time.

Recommended first settings

Defaults, native or 2× resolution, Vulkan. Increase quality gradually.

  • Enable automatic game fixes; read what they do when a title still glitches
  • Keep aspect ratio handling on “standard” until you understand a game’s widescreen patch
  • Note your GPU control panel overrides — they can fight the emulator’s vsync

Avoid

Random presets, unknown BIOS files, and aggressive speedhacks until you have a baseline.

  • Copying someone else’s full inis wholesale — small differences in hardware matter
  • Mixing BIOS regions across a library without labeling folders
  • Expecting the same internal resolution for every game in your backlog

Memory cards

Create virtual cards in the UI before long sessions. Import saves only from trusted conversions; keep backups before experimenting.

Hotkeys

Set save-state slots, pause, and fullscreen keys early. Consistent bindings reduce mistakes when you switch between keyboard and controller.
